Teaching our children to think for themselves is easier than you realise. Children have an innate ability to know their own mind!

We just have to protect it. Follow these tips to encourage critical thinking:

🧐 READ EVERYTHING. Let your children decide which books they’d like to read. You are the facilitator. Provide a decent collection, then let them choose.

🧐 DISCUSS WHAT THEY’VE READ. Discussions sparked by good books are what makes reading an enchanting activity for children. Let them develop their own thoughts and share them with you.

🧐 TALK ABOUT THE WORLD. Children often hear snippets of information about what’s happening in the world. Invite them into the conversation and let them share their own thoughts and opinions.

🧐 THE POWER OF PLAY. Playing is how children’s minds process information they’ve been exposed to throughout the day. Let them play and allow them to absorb what they have learnt.

🧐 GET OUTSIDE. Just like you shouldn’t underestimate the power of play, don’t underestimate the ability of fresh air and exercise to provide clarity to a chaotic mind. Get your children outside and let their minds process their thoughts and emotions.

“Mummy, why are there more white people in the world?”

I turned in shock to my little 8 yr old as he sat in the back of the car playing with his Lego Batman key ring.

“Why do you think there are more white people?” I asked.

“Because nearly all the superheroes are white and most of the people on TV are white. Hardly any of them look like me.”

Here, people, right here is why representation matters.

As a white, British, non-Muslim child, I never experienced these emotions growing up. My dolls looked like me, and I didn’t think it was a big deal.

When I became Muslim in my teens, I started to notice the lack of representation for Muslims.

Then I gave birth to 3 beautiful babies with Jamaican and Zambian heritage.

And suddenly the toy store became a sinister place.

Layla cried because her hair “didn’t look like Barbie’s” and my son thought only white people can be superheroes.

But things are slowly changing. Diverse representation is becoming a priority, a small one, yes. But it’s there.

So, here on Our Daily Wonders, I’d like to give shoutouts and reviews for toys, books, movies and shows that provide decent representation for my children.

✨ DISNEY LEARNING WORKBOOKS ✨

Earlier this week, I shared a reel showing the themed workbooks Layla has been loving recently.

Unlike her older brother, Layla loves writing and working through an activity book. This collection of Disney Learning books from @scholastic_uk have been game-changers this year.

When Layla became increasingly frustrated with online learning, her eyes lit up when I gave her these books. Layla loves "playing with numbers" and "reading something fun". These activity books tick both of those criteria and she looks forward to them each day.

The Sofia the First books support ages 5-6 and include reading comprehension, addition and subtraction.

The Frozen books support ages 6-7 and include the same subjects as Sofia the First, but also includes a book for English Grammar.

Both series support the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 in the UK.

It’s #TeacherAppreciationDay!

Even though I plant myself firmly in the pro-homeschool category, I don’t class myself as anti-school.

This year has been hard for my children as they have been schooling online since March 2020. We’ve had tears, tantrums and a whole lot of overwhelm.

So, this #TeacherAppreciationDay, I want to thank the very special teacher who empathised with my son’s feelings, adjusted the lessons and requirements accordingly and still managed to keep my son inspired and eager to learn!

Here is my eldest son who spent two days researching and trialling different ways to make a boat based on a project sent by his teacher.

It was a truly wonderful moment when he figured it out and was one of the few times we felt the brilliant buzz of excitement we used to get with homeschooling.
My son has had a fantastic year and we thank you 🙏🏼

This photo was taken by my daughter a few months ago. We were at the golf club whilst my boys practiced, and Layla wanted to practice her writing instead. I was busy with the boys and when I came back, Layla had taken my phone and snapped this picture by herself.

“I was proud of my writing, so I took a picture,” she declared with a smile.

PANDEMIC SCHOOLING

My children have been learning online since March 2020.

We stopped exclusively homeschooling them a couple years ago so they could experience an international school. We live in a tight-knit community, so nearly every single child in our neighbourhood goes to the same school. As a result, my children felt left out when school trips and events were talked about for weeks on end.

I had to push aside my opinions about classroom/institutional learning and send them into the community environment that existed at the time.

Then the 🦠 hit.

My children were home with me again! Physically, anyway. But their minds were still occupied by school “assignments” and online “meetings”.

So all the “experiences” school could previously offer that I couldn’t, disappeared into thin air and all we were left with was the grouped, standardised learning.

And I suddenly had a front row seat to how my children’s learning was being conducted in a group setting with 1 (sometimes 2) teachers.

Let’s just say this year has been extremely challenging for us as a family and I’ve had to fight to be heard as I try to cultivate a healthy learning environment for my children.

Online learning has been the hardest thing about the pandemic (closely followed by travel restrictions!)

Whilst we do some major tweaking to Layla’s learning over the next few weeks, we’re making use of @khanacademykids and I’m so impressed. The quality is great, the activities engaging, and Layla is FINALLY having fun doing something related to learning.

So, my kids have been learning virtually since their school closed in March because of The Virus That Shall Not Be Named.

Over this time, we’ve had our easy days and our extremely difficult days. We’ve learnt some things that make #VirtualLearning easier and things that make it a lot harder.

Here’s my first tip:

Does your child have a particular toy that comforts them?

Here Layla is holding her toy kitten close as she follows along with her music lesson.

It gave her hands something to do when she joined in the lesson helping her to focus and concentrate more.

When it was time to put it aside and work, she had something to comfort her. She has found online learning pretty stressful, and having her kitten close by cheered her up and kept a smile on her face.

Most of the time, life is a mess. It’s not Insta

Most of the time, life is a mess. It’s not Instagram-pretty. It’s chaotic. It’s stressful. It’s LIFE.

Now, whilst we all fight for organisation, it’s a process. And it won’t be perfect all of the time.

The photo above shows my desk AFTER I spent half an hour cleaning it. Swipe to see how it’s looked all week!

But when my desk is tidy, I feel calmer. I feel organised even if the rest of my house looks like a tornado hit!

All I have to do is tidy my desk and I feel less overwhelmed. But if I don’t get round to tidying it, that’s ok.

Motherhood is a constant battle against clutter. No matter how many Marie Kondo clean-outs we attempt! So we have to find that eye of the storm. That small area we can organise in a small amount of time but will help us feel mentally calm and ready to face the rest of the mess!

How do children enjoy learning?

Education isn’t something that happens to you. Education should be an active pursuit.

But for children to become active learners, they have to ENJOY learning.

And for that to happen, children must have positive learning experiences. When we put pressure on children, they become resistant. When we overwhelm children, they become resistant.

When children resist learning, it becomes a negative learning experience.

This is my biggest fight at the moment. #VirtualLearning has become a negative learning experience for 1 out of 3 of my children. She is very young, and the virtual setup just isn’t appropriate.

I am trying to compensate by trying to create as many positive experiences as possible.

Please drop your advice below! How can we encourage children to be active in the education whilst keeping the experience as positive as possible?

I’ve decided to start reading aloud again with the children. We have become engulfed by #VirtualLearning these days and we’re EXHAUSTED.

It’s draining the children and myself.

Some tea, biscuits, paints and a read aloud is just what we need!

This is one of my favourite photos. It was taken by Umar who was only 8 or 9 at the time. He got all excited, telling me how to stand, where to look. He crouched down on the gravel trying to find the best angle.

Even now, he looks at it with pride and declares: “I took that photo.”

Being the home educator that I am, I immediately wanted to nurture this skill and encourage him to explore his interest.

But then he lost interest.

Sometimes that happens. The minute we show enthusiasm for something, the child backs away. And that’s ok.

Maybe he will pick up a camera again and play. And when he does, I’ll do my best to play it cool 😂
