Apologies for the dramatic silence on this account! Distance Learning is taking it’s toll more than I expected. I was feeling the strain more than usual today and gave my kids a break... only to find Layla like this. She propped up her sketch pad, grabbed the paints and started copying the trees outside. She then added characters (clowns, a fox, and a snake). This was COMPLETELY independent. If my 5-year-old can hold onto her creative spark during this time, so can I ❤️❤️❤️

Getting our kids (young and old) to write can be a constant battle.
.
A lot of writing programmes have a variety of sentences for them to practice, which is great when the child actually WANTS to write.
.
But a child who doesn’t want to write doesn’t CARE if the “Cat sat on the mat.”
.
Kids will enjoy writing more when it’s about something they love and they see a purpose to it!
.
Layla didn’t know how to spell most of the words in this picture, but she came up with every single word and asked me to write it for her to copy.
.
Copy work is the main way I have taught all of my kids to write. It doesn’t matter how complicated the sentence, if they want me to write it for them to copy, I do.
.
They may not always copy it exactly, but it helps them develop that instinct for spelling that comes with the English language. Not everything can be phonetically decoded!
.

So yesterday I explained why Layla is struggling with the intensity of the Zoom lessons from school. Today we found a brilliant way to cope and wind down. And it was all Layla’s idea!
.
She found a mindfulness colouring book I received as a gift some years ago. Whilst waiting for her lessons to start, she asked if she could look through it. She flicked through the pages, her eyes wide with wonder.
.
Then she asked: “If I finish all my work and sit nicely in my lessons, please can we paint these together?”
.
So we did! We spent a good hour playing with colours and patterns. She learnt a new technique of patting her watercolour with tissue if she’d used too much and she loved the effect on her paper! We talked, we laughed, and we painted beautiful pictures.
.
Instead of the frazzled exhaustion of the past few days, we feel calm and content.

Not all phonics/reading programmes handle that transition well. Some children take to it extremely well, but for others it completely confuses them!

I was struggling. The kids were struggling. And that was ok. It won’t be easy all the time. It’s important we know when to stop. Know your limits and nurture yourself when you reach them.

With my kids spending so much time in front of a screen because of #virtuallearning I’m trying to push more art therapy time into our schedule.
.
This is a piece Khalid (7) did last term for his art class with school. Instead of using his pencil crayons, I encouraged him to raid the art draw and find something he doesn’t usually use.
.
He pulled out a box of soft pastels and had a BLAST getting all smudgy with the colours!
.
He was pretty impressed with the results!

So, after the awesome collaboration yesterday, there are a lot of new followers!

A little about me:
✨I first started home educating when my son was 2 and asked me to teach him to read and write.
✨I will continue to educate my children at home in some form or another, even when they also attend school.
✨We currently live in the Middle East as expats, but we’re hoping to return home to England soon!
✨I have 3 children: Umar is 9 (10 this month!), Khalid is 7 and Layla is 5.
✨I work from home as a writing coach and book editor (check me out over on @epicwritingkh) and I LOVE what I do.
✨I started Our Daily Wonders to share the wonder of home education, regardless of lifestyle. But I also wanted to show that we are MORE than home educators (check the Just For You section on the blog!)
✨I’m also writing a YA fantasy novel about a magical kingdom deep in the Amazon rainforest. The story address both environmental damage and religious corruption.

So... we’re NOT back to school!

For those of you who caught my #dayinthelife yesterday, you’ll know my kids have started #virtuallearning with their school because of the #Covid19 pandemic.
.
But... once a homeschooler, always a homeschooler!
.
When Layla’s maths lesson over Zoom was a little difficult for her to follow, I jumped on @twinklresources and in 2 minutes had a hands-on activity for her all about sorting shapes and colours! And when she decided her time would be better spent using glitter glue and lollipop sticks, I certainly didn’t stop her!
.
Umar worked very hard with his #distancelearning and rewarded himself with a good book curled up by the patio doors.
.
Khalid THRIVED with his Zoom lessons, because for SOME kids, it works! He had an amazing time and sat completing every task he was set.
.

QOTD: Do you use Twinkl? Which resources can’t you live without?

I’ve talked about phonics and Twinkl A LOT over the past few months - and for good reason!
.
.
All three of my kids have used Twinkl over the years to either exclusively homeschool or enrich their learning from school. It doesn’t matter which homeschool approach I’m using, Twinkl has been invaluable!
.
.
This year I’ve been able to help my daughter feel confident about reading and writing after an unpleasant experience with the reading programme at school left her feeling sad and demotivated.
.
.
She now LOVES phonics/reading time and takes pride in her writing. She is flying through the lessons and constantly asks me to do more sessions throughout the day.

So, 2020 has been rough. Understatement? I know.

So, 2020 has been rough. Understatement? I know.

There was a lot of buzz about making the most of lockdown and achieving those goals you have always wanted to pursue.

There were words of encouragement for easing the anxiety for your children and filling their hearts with wondrous quarantine memories.

And now we're in a position where we're being told to go out, send our kids to school and get back to normal... but it's still too dangerous to NOT wear a mask?? Are we safe or not??

This post is to give you permission to IGNORE ALL OF IT!!

If you get through this year and your family are still holding onto each other and you haven't lost your mind, then you're winning more than most.

Do what you need to get through each day, even if it's just sitting under a blanket and binging Netflix with your kids... Or send your kids to bed early to binge Netflix on your own!

There's no right way to quarantine!

I have some pretty strong opinions when it comes to reading programmes. The one Layla uses at school is... less than desirable. So, I took her back to basics and she LOVES the #twinklphonics one!

Going back to basics not only fills her with confidence, but helps me see where the “gaps” are and where she is struggling.
