Whether you’re a home educator or a school mum, chances are you’ve heard of the wonderful site “Twinkl”. Twinkl’s resources are pretty vast and it can be overwhelming to figure things out! Here is simple guide to explain how to get started with Twinkl.
What is Twinkl and do I need it?
Twinkl is a jam-packed website full of digital resources for parents and teachers to use with their children. When I first started home educating, I found Twinkl to be a huge relief. There are so many resources, curriculums, and unit studies on the internet, so when it came to actually preparing things for my kids, I was spending HOURS on the computer finding various resources to match the topic we were covering. Keeping track was HARD.
But when I found Twinkl, it saved so much time! The website was easy to use and it had EVERYTHING. All in one place. The resources are of exceptionally high quality and my kids love using them. The illustrations are adorable and colourful and you can tell heart and soul has gone into making them.
More than just worksheets, Twinkl offers original stories, projects, PowerPoints, eBooks, colouring sheets, assessments, mark schemes – anything you think you might need to teach your child and have fun at the same time. Most activities are differentiated across three levels of difficulty, making it easy to tailor the activity depending on your child’s ability.
It cut my workload in HALF!
What if I don’t homeschool?
Most people believe they don’t need Twinkl if they don’t homeschool. I disagree. Due to circumstances outside of my control, my children went into school last year. I STILL use Twinkl. We get activities from there, extra support for their learning in school, and I am still able to nurture their interests with child-led learning at home.
SEND and EAL
Another fantastic aspect of Twinkl is its accommodation for SEN and EAL children. Having resources made by teachers and educators gives reassurance that they are beneficial and suitable for your child.
Twinkl packages explained
Currently, Twinkl offers 3 membership options:
If you don’t intend to use Twinkl for anything more than the odd activity here and there, Core will suit you perfectly well with access to over 600,000 resources.
However, if you take a slightly more active role in home education, the planning and assessment resources available in the Extra and Ultimate packages will be a huge life-saver for you.
Personally, I opt for the Ultimate package every time. It’s not massively more expensive, but the sheer amount of resources you have access to is mind-blowing. You have access to the phonics and handwriting program, Boost (intervention, SAT and phonics screening tools), the Twinkl bookclub, interactive resources to use on the Twinkl app, PLUS all of the Secondary resources, as well.
The package you choose depends on your needs as a family and your home education intentions. For a complete breakdown of what each package offers, click here.
How to use Twinkl to follow the UK Curriculum
Despite my family and I living in Qatar, the local school follows the British curriculum. When I was home educating, my husband and I also agreed to follow the curriculum in case we ever needed to put them into school (which did happen!)
Whilst the resources on Twinkl suit any curriculum or homeschool methods, if you do choose to follow the UK curriculum, Twinkl makes it incredible easy.
With a page dedicated to curriculum aims, you simple select the stage suitable for your child and the subject you need, and you are lead to a page with all the curriculum aims linked to resources which help achieve that aim.
I find this incredibly useful when my child’s teacher tells me he/she is struggling in a particular area, I simply hit Twinkl and grab some activities to help them practice.
PlanIt – The easiest and quickest way to get started with Twinkl
My absolute favourite resource offered by Twinkl is the PlanIt scheme. The amount of time it saves is unbelievable. Browsing through Twinkl can lead you down a rabbit hole of downloading and printing everything you find – it’s all SO GOOD!
But I often don’t have time for that. This is where PlanIt comes in. Whichever topi we are covering, I will find it on PlanIt. By selecting the year group, subject, topic and area, I am presented with a range of resources numbered and grouped into lessons. Each lesson combined into one download complete with aims, PowerPoints, activities, worksheets, and materials. I may not use everything in there, but it makes planning ahead easier and I don’t spend hours gathering resources.
Twinkl for fun
Ultimately, Twinkl is FUN. For both parent and child. Twinkl is an ever-evolving website; nearly every time I log in, there is a new feature or area to explore. The planning resources are fantastic and are arranging lessons in advance easy and completely stress-free.
Is it worth the money?
Absolutely! There isn’t a doubt in my mind that I have gotten significantly more for my money than I ever expected.
Twinkl is a company I stand behind, regardless of whether my children are in school, we’re doing child-led activities, Charlotte Mason schooling, Montessori, or the Classical Curriculum. Whatever we choose, Twinkl has resources to help.
